Dr. Sevim AKŞİT from the Istanbul Rumeli University Faculty of Sports Sciences, Department of Exercise and Sports Sciences for Individuals with Disabilities, emphasizes the positive effects of sports activities on the social development of individuals with Down syndrome. Dr. AKŞİT highlights the importance of an inclusive approach, accurate information, supportive environments, and collaboration for the integration of these individuals into society.
"Sports activities contribute not only to the physical but also the psychological development of individuals with Down syndrome,"
Dr. Akşit points out. She emphasizes the necessity for individuals with Down syndrome, who are part of society, to be able to lead independent lives and integrate into society. "The importance of sports activities lies not only in physical health but also in social and psychological development. Research shows that regular exercise enhances the social skills, communication abilities, and self-esteem of individuals with Down syndrome. Team sports and individual exercises enrich their life experiences, providing opportunities for self-expression and participation in society. Sports can help these individuals gain more self-confidence and joy in life. Therefore, encouraging individuals with Down syndrome to engage in sports and facilitating their access to sports activities is an important step in enhancing their social integration and quality of life," she said.
Dr. Akşit emphasizes Istanbul Rumeli University's efforts to support individuals with special needs and to implement an inclusive education model to ensure the integration of students with special needs. "In the Faculty of Sports Sciences, 100% scholarship support is provided for the education of physically disabled, dyslexic, autistic, and Down syndrome students, taking into account their special needs. In addition, faculty staff receive regular training on students with special needs. Recreational events such as ENFEST are organized to raise awareness in society. These events, held with the participation of individuals with special needs and their families, contribute to societal awareness. Our university's efforts positively impact the lives of individuals with Down syndrome," she concluded.
