About the Department

Istanbul Rumeli University Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics started its education and training programme in 2020. Students who follow and successfully complete the Nutrition and Dietetics programme of our university are entitled to practice and practice the profession of Dietitian with a bachelor's degree at the end of 4 years of education. The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics receives students according to the score type (MF3) as a result of the Higher Education Transition Examination (LYS) conducted by the Student Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM).

Rumeli Education Method will be applied to the students of Istanbul Rumeli University Department of Nutrition and Dietetics to increase their preferability when they complete their 4-year education and graduate. In addition to the applied curriculum, Rumeli Education Method includes additional certificate programmes that will facilitate the opportunities of minor and double major prepared by expert instructors and will provide gain and preferability in professional life.

 

Our department aims to train qualified dietitians who are strong in communication, creative, productive, scientifically equipped, researcher, questioner, analytical thinker, responsible, patient, tolerant, have professional competence and sensitivity, adhere to ethical principles and universal values, are preferred nationwide, and are internationally recognised. To be a department that educates graduates specialised in the field of nutritional sciences and dietetics, contributes to the healthy development of society with qualified, innovative scientific studies and consultancy services, and is recognised, valued and preferred in national and international platforms. In addition, it is our goal to adopt continuous improvement, creativity and innovation as an established value in our department culture by conducting social studies and publications as part of preventive and curative health services.

Dietitian is a person who has completed at least 4 years of nutrition and dietetics education and training programme of any higher education institution related to health and is entitled to practice and practice the profession of dietitian with "Nutrition and Dietetics Undergraduate Diploma".
In the education and training programme of our department, the internationally valid National Core Curriculum is followed. Thus, international standardisation has been achieved by using a universal, dynamic education programme that includes the latest developments and technologies and supports the bio-psychosocial approach.
The education given to the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics is a synthesis of biochemistry, chemistry, physiology, microbiology, epidemiology, enzymology, psychology, medicine, economics, agriculture, sociology and statistics.


Department of Nutrition and Dietetics during 4 years of education; It covers the theoretical and practical training given in the field of nutrition and dietetics with basic health units in order to understand the human body and its work and to understand the changes that nutrients and nutritional intervention will bring about in the body.
Nutrition and Dietetics Programme includes basic health sciences such as Basic Chemistry, Medical Biology and Genetics, Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Epidemiology and special subjects such as Food Service Systems, Maternal and Child Nutrition, Medical Nutrition Therapies in Adult and Child Diseases as well as Sports Nutrition, Nutrition in Old Age etc. There are laboratory and kitchen applications that will reinforce the theoretical knowledge gained in these courses. Courses such as research methods and statistics are also included in the education and training curriculum for scientific researches that students will plan in both clinical practice and academic studies after graduation. In addition to these; students also acquire the ability to apply professional knowledge with summer internship, hospital internship and institutional internship.

Dietitians can be chief dietitian / department dietitian depending on the number of dietitians in the institutions and organisations where they work.
They can be managers in institutions and organisations providing catering services.
They can take senior positions in nutrition / communication / education / legal requirements / R&D activities in the food industry and even work at global levels.
They can continue their careers by participating in graduate and doctoral programmes in branches such as nutritional sciences, dietetics, food service system, biochemistry and anatomy.

In parallel with the development in the dietetic profession, the working areas of dietitians have also increased considerably. They easily find the opportunity to progress in their profession in every field where nutrition and food are available.
As the importance of nutrition in growth, development, protection of lifelong health, improvement of quality of life and treatment of health problems is understood, the need for dietitians, an important member of the health team, has increased.
The areas where dietitians can work can be listed as follows:
As an Educational Dietician / Academician in educational institutions
As a Research Dietitian in research institutions
As a Therapeutic Dietitian in hospitals (Today, this field is divided into many sub-fields. These are; Diabetes Dietitian, Renal Dietitian, Oncology Dietitian, Enteral-Parenteral Unit Dietitian, Outpatient Dietitian etc.)
As an Executive Dietitian in Institutions with Food System (Schools, Banks, Public Institutions, etc. in food and beverage services, Restaurants, Hotels, etc. in food services, Elderly Care Homes, Food Factories)
As a Community Health Dietitian (in Ministries, Mother-Child Health Centres, International Aid Organisations, etc.)
As a product consultant in the Food Industry
Private Consultancy Offices
As a consultant in health clubs, fitness centres etc.

They have the right to receive a bachelor's degree in two different fields in their departments.
(*departments that are compatible with the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics when the departments are opened, are departments that can do double major)
Students enrolled in the undergraduate education programme of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics can complete some courses from a different department in our university simultaneously and successfully, and receive a certificate by increasing their knowledge in a different field with minor programmes.
With double major / minor opportunities, our students can improve themselves during their education period and document their qualifications with diplomas and certificates.

The language of instruction in the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics is Turkish. General English courses (compulsory by the Council of Higher Education) are given by distance education. However, students whose General English level is B1 according to CEFR can request Career English courses conducted under İRÜ Continuing Education Centre. Career English courses pave the way for students to follow the information about their fields in international language and to search for job opportunities abroad.

Within the scope of exchange programmes managed by Istanbul Rumeli University Erasmus Coordinatorship, the Faculty of Health Sciences sends its students to universities in Turkey and abroad within the scope of quota every year and accepts students from partner universities within the scope of the protocol.

Istanbul Rumeli University Department of Nutrition and Dietetics students are supported with certificate programmes given by the Continuing Education Centre during their education period. The certificates to be given follow the legislation updates. Students who successfully complete the certificate programmes transition to professional business life by having the equipment needed in the international arena at the graduation stage.

Internship is an education and training process in which the theoretical and practical knowledge, skills and competencies gained in the nutrition and dietetics programme are applied in real professional life or in situations very close to reality and professional competence is increased.
Nutrition and Dietetics Departments should have 5 different internship programmes.
