Information On Our English Preparatory Programs

ACADEMIC STAFF
Our academic staff in both programs are comprised of experienced instructors who have worked many years in preparatory programs and have completed certifications on different techniques and methodologies in the field of English teaching.


ASSIGNMENT AND EVALUATION SYSTEM
After the placement exam at the beginning of the academic year, students are placed into classes according to their appropriate level of English knowledge.


PLACEMENT TEST
A placement exam is a test designed to evaluate a student's knowledge of a subject and determine the level in which they will begin their program. At T.R. İstanbul Rumeli University a placement exam is done in tvvo steps. The first step includes multiple choice questions. Students who pass the multiple choice exam with a passing score of 70 and above will then participate in a second essay writing exam. At the end of the placement exam, classes are determined according to the students' level.


EXAMS
Both English Preparatory programs will have tvvo midterms, one final and three speaking exams in total per term. The exam dates can be found on our academic calendar. 


FINAL PASSING GRADE
Students will need to achieve a passing grade of at least 70 in order to be considered successful in the program.

ADVISING SYSTEM
Each instructor is assigned a class at the beginning of the term. This instructor is responsible for informing students of announcements in a timely manner.


MEDICAL REPORTS AND EXCUSE EXAMS
İn order for students to be able to take an excuse exam in place of their midterms, they must submit a valid medical report. Therefore, there are excuse exams for midterms only.Students who miss a final exam will be able to take a make-up exam in its place. A medical report is not needed in the case of make-up exams.


ATTENDANCE
For both preparatory programs the absenteeism allovvance is 15% of total classes during each term. When classes begin, further information vvill be given to students by their instructors.

"CAREER ENGLISH" COURSES
"Career English" courses aim to ensure that students have knowledge of English related to their specific field of study, while they continue their studies in their native tongue (Turkish) so that they will be able to acquire an international career upon graduation. İn these Career English courses, students will read and understand texts written in English which include topics they will learn in their programs. Texts selected for study for the career English classes are suggested by each specific department's professors. Commonly used English words and terminology for each field of study are taught based on the content of the reading text. Language problems and barriers that can arise in preventing the students' understanding of the content of the text are addressed by the instructor. Therefore, students who wish to participate in the Career English courses are required to be at least B1 level according to the Common European Framevvork (CEFR). Upon the completion of these courses students will be able to read and understand books and articles written in English in their fields.
