Operating Principles

The office functions as a sub-branch of the Presidency of Istanbul Rumeli University to start, administer and develop various Erasmus agreements in the areas of student and staff mobility, conduct of projects, training.

The Head of the Erasmus Office, Hakan Köni, is responsible for the coordination of the mobility activities, projects and training in coordination with the staff in charge of specific activities. All the departments at the university have their Erasmus coordinators and the coordinators work in cooperation with the Erasmus center office for various Erasmus activities. The list of the coordinators could be accessed from the staff link in the Erasmus main page.

Mentoring for Incoming Mobility

The academic and administrative staff of Istanbul Rumeli University all have the knowledge of English language to communicate with the incoming participants for anything they may need to ask. The university presents its home students intensive English language courses for all through their education at the university to make them capable of communicating with the incoming participants to help them in their learning and social activities.

In addition to these, the University is prepared to offer intensive Turkish language courses to the incoming students as well to contribute further to their learning and other activities.

Recognition of Mobility Activities

All the courses that the mobility students take during their mobility will be counted as elective or obligatory. The international office will work together with the department coordinators to match the courses between the home and host universities. The semester or the year that the students spent abroad will be considered as a full replacement for the semester or the year that a regular student must follow in the home university provided that the students complete the courses in question satisfactorily.

The measures will be taken thus for the mobility students not to follow an extended semester or year at the home university. Upon their completion of the mobility, the students will be provided with transcripts that contain a full, accurate and timely record of their achievements regarding the courses and other activities participated.

Rumeli Language Policy

The medium of education at Istanbul Rumeli University is Turkish. But the students are provided with a powerful English language support from the first to the last year of their education. The first cycle students are given about 10 hours of English language lessons all through their education at the university. And the short cycle students receive about 3 hours of English lessons for two years.

Depending on the department, the students receive various English language courses at rates of 10 to 30 % of their entire curriculum. In addition to this, in order to be able to participate in the mobility, the students are required to document their proficiency by taking an internationally recognized test of English language or taking an exam organized by Istanbul Rumeli University.

ISTANBUL RUMELI UNIVERSITY ERASMUS POLICY STATEMENT

Istanbul Rumeli University is a foundation university established on 23rd April 2015 by the Balcı Foundation. The University has the objective to be an advanced academic institution that educates scientists and scholars for the high benefit of the domestic and the international community, and transmits knowledge, experience and civility to the youth. The University offers education in all areas of science and knowledge including medicine, health sciences, engineering, and social sciences thanks to its specialized and experienced academic staff. We believe that Istanbul Rumeli University’s prospects to accomplish its goals will enhance substantially by integration with the international academic world. Taking its first students in September 2016, Istanbul Rumeli University is strongly motivated to sign partnership agreements with universities reputed for their achievements in science, technology and knowledge.

Geographically, Istanbul Rumeli University wishes to establish partnerships with universities and other academic institutions in Europe, North-South America, Asia and Africa but the University will not be bound by strict geographical preferences. The major criteria for choosing the partners will be the excellence in higher education, but we will take into account geographical proximity as well for purposes of ensuring continuity in the relations established. Istanbul Rumeli University aims to attract the most successful and promising students and researchers into its campus from around the world to strengthen its dynamic and sophisticated research environment. It is a major objective of Istanbul Rumeli University to use the mobility and collaborative project facilities of Erasmus + to help the students and researchers have better opportunities for their future graduate and research studies.

An important objective of Istanbul Rumeli University to establish partnership with the other academic institutions is to develop intercultural dialogue and friendship among the young and intellectual populations of nations. Many of the conflicts reigning on the globe presently are rooted in or escalated by social, cultural, religious, ethnic, racial differences. And if such differences are left in isolation in their environment, they only serve to grow and deteriorate present conflicts. We wish to make use of the opportunities of mobility and collaborative works provided by Erasmus + program for intercultural communication and dialogue as a mechanism that will serve to the purposes of effective peace-building and prosperity among nations.

Target group of the mobility activities is the short and the first cycle students, and the academic and the administrative staff in the first place, but as the university grows further with the opening of new graduate programs, students from the second and the third cycle will also be added to Erasmus + activities. We are strongly aware of the benefits of the mobility of the academic and the administrative staff to the learning, research and training environment and their participation in various Erasmus + activities will be supported strongly.

Established in April 2015, Istanbul Rumeli University does not have double/multiple/joint degree programs presently, but the introduction of such programs are in the agenda of the university administration for future years that will be announced on the university website as initiated.
